Terms of service
Last updated: 8 October 2026
These terms explain how lessons with Jessie’s Chinese Studio work, what you can expect from me, and what I ask of you. They are written in plain English. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have by law as a UK consumer.
1. Who I am
I am Zhang Ruijian, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom, trading as Jessie’s Chinese Studio. When you book lessons, your contract is with me personally.
- Email: jessieuk719@gmail.com
- Postal address for service: Unit 153682, Courier Point, 13 Freeland Park, Wareham Road, Poole, Dorset, BH16 6FH, UK
2. The service
I provide one-to-one Mandarin Chinese tutoring for adult learners, delivered online by video call on the platform I confirm with you when we arrange your lessons. Regular lessons are 50 minutes each.
New students start with an introductory trial lesson of 30 minutes, priced at £10. One trial is available per student.
Current prices for single lessons and lesson packages are shown on my price list. All prices are in pounds sterling (GBP).
3. How booking and payment work
- Step 1: Trial. You book a trial lesson through Cal.com, my scheduling provider, or send me an enquiry through the form on this website. The trial costs £10: I will send a PayPal payment request (Goods & Services) to your email address, and your trial is confirmed once payment is received. The trial carries no obligation to buy further lessons.
- Step 2: Agreeing your lessons. At or after the trial, we agree your lesson plan and the price, following the published price list. I will confirm what we agreed by email.
- Step 3: Payment. Payment is made in advance. I will send a PayPal payment request (Goods & Services) to your email address. Lessons are scheduled once payment has been received.
Your contract with me is formed when I confirm your booking by email after receiving your payment. I accept payment only through PayPal Goods & Services: please do not send payment as “Friends & Family”, as that payment type carries no buyer protection for you, and I will refund it and re-issue a proper payment request.
When you use Cal.com or PayPal, their own terms and privacy policies also apply: cal.com/terms · paypal.com/uk/legalhub/paypal/useragreement-full.
4. Your 14-day right to cancel (cooling-off period)
Because you buy lessons at a distance (online), you have a legal right under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 to cancel your purchase within 14 days without giving a reason, and receive a refund. The 14 days run from the day after your booking is confirmed (see section 3). This applies to the £10 trial lesson as well as to single lessons and packages.
To cancel, email me at jessieuk719@gmail.com within the 14 days. You do not need a special form: a clear statement that you wish to cancel is enough. You may use the model form below if you prefer.
Model cancellation form (complete and return only if you wish to cancel)
To: Zhang Ruijian, trading as Jessie’s Chinese Studio, jessieuk719@gmail.com
I hereby give notice that I cancel my contract for the supply of the following service: [describe lessons booked]
Booked on: [date] · Name: [your name] · Email used to book: [email] · Date: [date]
If you want lessons to start within the 14 days
5. Rescheduling and missed lessons
This everyday lesson policy is separate from, and does not reduce, your statutory 14-day right to cancel described above.
- You may reschedule a lesson free of charge with at least 24 hours’ notice.
- Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed without notice, are charged in full.
- If I need to cancel or reschedule a lesson, I will give you as much notice as possible and offer a replacement time or a refund for that lesson.
- If a lesson is significantly interrupted by a technical failure on my side, I will make up the lost time or offer a replacement lesson.
- Lesson packages are valid for the period stated on the price list.
6. Refunds
When a refund is due, I will process it through PayPal to your original payment method within 14 days of your cancellation. If you cancel under your 14-day statutory right after lessons have begun with your consent, the refund will be reduced pro-rata for lessons already delivered.
7. My service standard, and lesson records
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, I must perform the service with reasonable care and skill, and I will.
A lesson counts as delivered when I am present and available on the agreed video call link at the scheduled start time for the scheduled duration. If you do not attend and have not rescheduled in time, the lesson is still treated as delivered for refund and payment purposes. If I fail to attend a scheduled lesson, that lesson is not delivered and you will be offered a replacement or a refund for it.
I keep a simple written log of lessons booked, delivered, rescheduled, and missed, and I confirm bookings and changes by email, so that both of us have a clear record if any question about payment or refunds arises.
8. What I ask of you
- Please join lessons on time. Lessons end at the scheduled time even if you join late.
- You are responsible for your own device, internet connection, and a reasonably quiet place to learn.
- Please treat lessons with normal courtesy. I may end a lesson without refund if a student behaves abusively or inappropriately.
- Lesson materials I share with you are for your personal study only, and may not be shared or published.
9. Age
My lessons are for adults aged 18 or over. By booking, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old.
10. Liability
Everyone learns differently. I will teach with reasonable care and skill, but I cannot guarantee that you will reach a particular level of Mandarin or pass any particular exam. Content on this website is general information about my services, not a promise of specific results.
I am not liable for losses that were not foreseeable when you booked, or that were not caused by my breach of these terms. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits my liability for death or personal injury caused by my negligence, for fraud, or for any other liability that cannot be excluded under UK law. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
11. Using this website
You may browse this website and use the enquiry form for their intended purposes. Please do not misuse the site, attempt to interfere with it, or submit unlawful or abusive content through the form. The content of this website, including text and images, belongs to me unless stated otherwise, and may not be copied for commercial use without my permission.
12. General
- These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
- I may update these terms from time to time. The version published on this page at the time you book applies to your booking.
- If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
