汉语水平考试 Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì: Chinese Proficiency Test
HSK 3.0 brings a revised syllabus and nine-level framework, but check your exam version before changing your study plan.

If you are studying for HSK, you may have seen “HSK 3.0” beside the familiar six levels. Does that mean your current materials are out of date? The answer depends on the exam you plan to take. Here is a quick guide to what has changed and what to check next.

What Has Changed?

A learner arranging flashcards beside three ascending stacks of study notebooks The new framework groups nine levels into three stages.

The new HSK framework has three stages: Levels 1–3 are elementary, 4–6 intermediate and 7–9 advanced. Levels 1–6 still exist. The revised syllabus covers five areas: tasks, topics, vocabulary, grammar and Chinese characters. Because both versions use the labels 1–6, a level number alone does not tell you which exam you are taking.

✨ Did you know?
The [HSK 7–9 exam](https://www.chinesetest.cn/HSK/7-9) is already available as one computer-based test. Its result can be below Level 7 or at Level 7, 8 or 9.

When Does HSK 3.0 Start?

HSK 3.0 had trial sittings in 2026. The official worldwide launch is scheduled for 13 December 2026, according to the exam organiser’s notice. A trial sitting does not tell you which version another test date uses. Confirm the version, format and any speaking requirement with your test centre before choosing materials.

How Should You Prepare?

If your test is soon, use the syllabus and sample papers for your registered version. If you are learning without an exam date, the HSK 3.0 syllabus can guide your progress. Practise listening, reading, speaking and writing in useful situations, not just word lists. Our HSK preparation page labels its downloadable vocabulary lists as HSK 2.0.
