喂 wéi: hello? (on the phone)
Start a casual call with 喂, then adjust your greeting to the person and situation.

Your phone rings, and you recognise a Chinese-speaking friend's name. What do you say first? Usually, just 喂 (wéi). If the caller is a client or an unfamiliar number, you may want a more polite opening. A few short phrases will help you answer, find out who is calling and keep the conversation moving.

1. Answer a Familiar Call with 喂

A woman smiling while answering a mobile phone on her sofa A warm 喂 is a natural start to a call from a friend.

喂 (wéi) is the usual opening when you pick up the phone. Say it in a friendly voice, and it sounds friendly. With someone you know, you can add their name or ask how they are:

  • 喂,小丽! (Wéi, Xiǎolì!) Hello, Xiaoli!
  • 喂,你现在方便说话吗? (Wéi, nǐ xiànzài fāngbiàn shuōhuà ma?) Hello, is now a good time to talk?

You may also hear 喂?喂? (Wéi? Wéi?) if the connection is poor. Here, the speaker is checking whether the other person can hear them. Younger speakers sometimes answer friends with an English “hello” or “hi”, too; usage varies by person and setting.

2. Use 您好 for a More Formal Call

An office worker politely answering a desk phone 您好 sets a polite tone at work or with an unfamiliar caller.

At work, or when you do not know who is calling, 您好 (nín hǎo) is a safe, polite choice. Some workplaces add the company or department name. The opening may be as simple as 您好,ABC公司。 (Nín hǎo, ABC gōngsī.), “Hello, ABC Company.”

If the caller does not introduce themselves, ask 请问您是哪位? (Qǐngwèn nín shì nǎ wèi?), “May I ask who's calling?” When you make a business call, give your own name early: 您好,我是Lisa。 (Nín hǎo, wǒ shì Lisa.), “Hello, this is Lisa.”

The difference is practical. Your greeting helps the caller understand whether the conversation is relaxed or professional. You do not need to memorise a rigid rule: listen to the other person's tone and respond in a similar way.

3. Keep the Call Moving

Two colleagues speaking by phone from an office and a reception desk A short phrase gives you time to check a name or transfer a call.

Need a moment? Say 稍等一下 (shāo děng yíxià), “Just a moment, please.” If you want to check whether it is a good time to talk, ask 现在方便说话吗? (Xiànzài fāngbiàn shuōhuà ma?) before starting your main point.

For example, 现在方便说话吗?我想跟您聊聊那个项目。 (Xiànzài fāngbiàn shuōhuà ma? Wǒ xiǎng gēn nín liáo liao nàge xiàngmù.) means “Is now a good time to talk? I'd like to discuss that project with you.” This is useful when you are the caller and the topic may take more than a minute.

A Short Everyday Conversation

Lisa calls an office and asks to speak to Manager Wang.

A: 您好,请问您是哪位?
Nín hǎo, qǐngwèn nín shì nǎ wèi?
Hello, may I ask who's calling?

B: 您好,我是ABC公司的Lisa。请问王经理在吗?
Nín hǎo, wǒ shì ABC gōngsī de Lisa. Qǐngwèn Wáng jīnglǐ zài ma?
Hello, this is Lisa from ABC Company. Is Manager Wang available?

A: 请稍等一下,我帮您转接。
Qǐng shāo děng yíxià, wǒ bāng nín zhuǎnjiē.
One moment, please. I'll transfer your call.

B: 好的,谢谢。
Hǎo de, xièxie.
All right, thank you.

What If You Are Unsure?

If you know the caller, a relaxed 喂 is enough. With an unfamiliar caller, 您好 and 请问您是哪位? help you find your footing. If you are calling someone else, identify yourself before explaining why you rang. You can always use 稍等一下 if you need to check a detail.

Some learners worry that 喂 sounds rude because it is so short. On the phone, it is an ordinary greeting; your voice gives it warmth. Outside phone calls, 喂 can also be used to get someone's attention, where tone and context matter more. That is why “only used on the phone” is too broad a rule.

✨ Did you know?
In some workplaces, staff answer with a set phrase that includes their company name. In a personal call, the same person may simply say 喂.

Final Takeaway

Use 喂 for an easy start to a familiar call and 您好 when you want a more polite opening. Ask 请问您是哪位? when you need to identify the caller, and 稍等一下 when you need a moment. Practise these small steps and phone calls will feel less daunting.
